Many patients have asked me what they can do that would help build their immune system especially after coming out of a pandemic. While being vaccinated, wearing masks when appropriate, and social distancing were a part of what we did to prevent getting COVID-19, building your immune system should always be a priority.

Vitamin D

Ensure that your vitamin D3 levels are within the normal range. It may come as a surprise, but most Long Islanders are vitamin D3 deficient. This is why it is very important to get your levels checked by your provider.

What if you are low in Vitamin D?

It is important to get your Vitamin D levels up by taking 50,000 units of vitamin D3 50,000 on a weekly basis. Always consult your health care provider before starting any new supplements to see what is best for your health.

Signs of Vitamin D3 Deficiency

There are some signs that you may be vitamin D3 deficient including:

  • Feelings of fatigue
  • Getting sick more often than usual
  • Feelings of depression or mood swings (you should seek medical advice because this can also be a sign of more serious conditions that may need other interventions)
  • Aches and pains
  • Weak bones

Magnesium is also important

While vitamin D3 helps your immune system, magnesium helps your body metabolize vitamin D3 so that it becomes activated and ready for your body to use. Knowing your magnesium levels are just as important as knowing your vitamin D3 levels.
